China arrests 43 people it says are Taiwanese spies

SHANGHAI, China — Chinese security investigators have rounded up 24 Taiwanese and 19 Chinese who authorities say have confessed to spying for Taiwan, the official Xinhua News Agency reported today.
The report did not further identify those detained or say what sort of spying they allegedly conducted for Taiwan, the self-ruling island that China claims as part of its territory.

China and Taiwan split after the Communists toppled the mainland-based Nationalist government in 1949. China has repeatedly threatened to use force to control Taiwan.

Hong Kong's independent Ming Pao newspaper alleged this week that Taiwan's president blew the cover of 36 of the island's spies in a speech last month in which he listed the locations of 496 missiles he said China had pointed at Taiwan.

The newspaper reported that China had arrested 21 Taiwanese and 15 Chinese nationals.

Taiwan's Military Intelligence Bureau said: "To this moment, after undergoing verification, we can say none of our personnel has been arrested by the Chinese communists."
