China intensifies fight against corruption
(12/24/2003 -- 20:57GMT+7)

Beijing, Dec. 24 (VNA) - The Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee discussed Party building work and fight against corruption on Tuesday under the chairmanship of General Secretary Hu Jintao.

They agreed that negative phenomena and corruption as well as the conditions that nurture these phenomena need to be eliminated.

New and remarkable anti-corruption efforts improved the Party's style and cleaned up the government since the 16th CPC Congress in 2002.

The anti-corruption drive should be conducted in a substantial manner, as it is of great importance for ensuring the smooth accomplishment of all the tasks of the Party and the state, the meeting stressed.

The Chinese Procuracy prosecuted 38,000 corruption cases in the first 11 months of this year. About 2,600 officials have reportedly been involved in corruption.-Enditem
