That cost is to develop the plane, not the cost per plane. More whistles and bells means higher development costs. It looks like it will be a great weapons platform.

This smells of a potential tax payer fleece

The whole project stinks. The F-35 originated when we were going to fight the Russians. It and the F-22 are not needed. Our present F-15/16 and 18 planes, with upgrades, will outperform any competition we will face for the next 20 years. By then, we will have eliminated Pilots.

The F-22/35 program is a 200 Billion dollar boondoggle now. Great planes, but no need. But try to talk the Air Force, the contractors, and the Congressmen out of them!
