I'll speak for myself on that one: the issue isn't "anti-profit", it's "anti-Americanism". When you hear the phrase "American multinationals" constantly repeated in the media, remember this: Many of these multinational companies, both public and private operate neither in the interests of other countries nor American citizens. They eagerly ship jobs elsewhere, and hire illegals in the US They do not pay US taxes, preferring to domicile in the Bahamas, yet enjoy American subsidies. They book profits also in tax havens, using transfer pricing and other accounting tricks. They revel in access to American tax dollars, gov't contracts, grants, and corruption of the jellyfish Congress and a profiteering administration It may be said it is not the fault of amoral businesses that they direct efforts toward maximizing profits, even at the expense of the American people that support them with taxes, defense, and infrastructure. I notice that you didn't nibble at my invitation to provide a pointer to what the issue is if it's not merely anti-profit as Sowell claimed, at least not today. Busy day today. You redirected the discussion to Dean so I looked to see if he had an interpretation. I searched on "globalization" and "profits" and found no mention of the subject on his web site but I did find a somewhat related quote elsewhere. The reference to Dean was on the issue of sound-bite media manipulation, not globalization, which he hasn't made a statement on, so I can't direct you on that. Dean did, however, say in Thursday's NH speech that the moral business climate has become as depraved (my word not his) as political leadership -- As goes the top of amoral political leadership, so goes American business. One of a hundred vivid examples: Bush appoints Harvey Pitt, a prime apologist for corporate cirminal activity, as SEC chairman to loosen already-shady corporate bookkeeping, so the message rings loud and clear to the business leadership: no one is watching out for the American people, so have a free-for-all.
