When I see photos like that I can only wonder how well the volunteer Army will survive. Before Iraq and Afghanistan the Army was fairly soft duty it seems. Duty in Germany, Korea, coming home most every night. I spent five years at sea in the USN, it was no picnic but the food was good, the bed was clean and climate controlled and the skills I learned have benefited me very well.

I see UW got Cobalt's nerve with the talk on the draft. You can be sure many duel income well to do families who have done well for themselves will do everything they can to keep their Einsteins from making any sacrifices for their country.

Idealistically the concept of some type of required service for the country sounds very appealing. But I dont think it is realistic and doubt it is worth the effort. I do believe the correct manner to ensure we attract and retain the required personnel in sufficient numbers is with money and respect.

We sure as hell do not need a military staffed with women in potential combat roles because we cannot find enough men to fill the billets. The pay, benefits and job preferences should be geared to meet the military's needs, whatever the cost.

To me that shows our GIs can find a place to sleep anytime and anywhere and that's very important.
