So atheists are obliged to invent one, promote it politically and to defend it against challenges.

Not necessarily. Surely you have observed that the non-religious among us here have pretty much the same sense of ethics as those who claim religious roots. We don't have to invent anything from whole cloth. We can take what is, extract and endorse the sins against man, ignore the sins against God and other solely religious aspects, and blend in nicely with the rest of you. There's nothing really to defend there since the religious share our ethics. The only thing to defend against is bigotry because we don't practice our ethics in the same spirit.

For starters ... 60 million killed by Stalin

Atheism didn't do that. Atheism was associated with it but wasn't the cause of it. Atheism was another tool in their tool kit, along with gulags and purges. The car is the tool that drunks use to kill people. The car isn't responsible for the problem. Don't confuse Solon or me with Pol Pot. I've never killed anyone nor would I. I think it's unlikely that Solon, even in his crankier moods, would either. Don't expect me to be an apologist for the communists. I don't expect you to be an apologist for the Wahabbis.
