Strator Article Considered
Hi el g,
The situation in Iraq is complex. There are numerous factions who each have their own agenda. On this we agree.

You say Americans are "...essentially irrelevant [in Iraq]" & you seem to think Americans are a clueless bunch who are blundering around there until they burn their fingers sufficiently that they will decide to leave. You wrote: "... We will stay until tired of losing men and money, then we will go, and the people there will sort themselves out. ..."
--- I think you may be wrongfully assuming that US behavior in years past (pre 9/11/01 )predicts current & future behavior, & I think that you may be mistaking US play as described in US-media for actual US moves & intentions.
--- I think it is a mistake to buy into the idea that the US govt is a dim-witted bungler who doesn't understand the real issues & players. The US has many guns & much money & is, imho, not the idiot you seem to suppose it to be.
--- It is true that in years past the US has (for internal political reasons) failed to be resolute when confronted by enemies. Imho, it is a new day now.
--- You wrote "...The only way that we can change this [the irrelevancy you ascribe to the US], and make ourselves relevant, is to resort to terror on a mass scale and genocide. I don’t think we have reached that place yet."
I think you are wrong here on several levels. I think that the US can use its guns & money to exert strong influence in Iraq in many ways without such measures. But I also believe that the agents of the US are capable of doing whatever is necessary in pursuit of the best interests of the US. Imho, anyone who believes that US agencies will squeemishly refrain from inflicting suffering on enemies of the US is no student of history.
--- STRATFOR's presented POV is, I think, interesting & thought-provoking. But I think that it is necessarily impossible for us to be sure of what is true when it is in the interest of many (if not all) players to misrepresent the situation & intentions of themselves as well as those of their allies & adversaries.
regards,
diana
