without distancing herself from their content in any discernible way.

First of all, we have no context. We don't know what was said before and after nor what visuals were on the screen. We don't know what expression she had on her face. We don't know that she didn't conspicuously distance herself. If one is inclined to see leftie bias in the media, one assumes that there was no distancing. If one isn't, one doesn't.

Secondly, she did distance herself. She said "he said" twice in that single sentence. Twice. She was reporting what someone else said. The emphasis by the second mention tells us that she didn't support what she reported that he said. Perhaps you didn't "discern" that. Reporters do that all the time when they're reporting something that disturbs them. I think it's subconscious but it may be intentional, them not wanting anyone to thing they really think what they're reporting is OK.

Thirdly, she shouldn't have to conspicuously distance herself. Saddam's statements are so surreal on their face that no one could reasonably be expected to accept his self assessment was on target. Now, perhaps that does show some bias. She is assuming that no one out there is nutty enough to believe that Saddam's people love him as he asserts. But it isn't the kind of bias you and Michael are inferring.

Re Falwell, I imagine she would have reported both stories in an equally straight way. That's her job. And typical Americans would roll their eyes at both reports on both nutcases.
