The nation will tell Dean what the important issues are, not the other way around. When James Carville (I think) said "It's the economy, stupid," he was reflecting a general trend of thought already existing among Americans, he wasn't trying to make the economy an issue when it wasn't. And also, the God/Guns/Gays issues have become national, starting with the no prayer in public schools ruling by the Supreme Court, which in many places has stupidly translated into no mention of God at all. Thus they have ended up as issues for a President to address.

BTW, what wedge issues did the GOP create in 1968?
