The Government's job is to make the world safe for us.

LB,
Technically, the government's job is to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.

We are responsible for our own safety in this world. Our leaders remind of us of that often. The message, "You may not be able to depend on government authorities to tell you what to do" is stated at least four times at www.ready.gov. Here are three quotes...

Biological Threat:
“In the event of a biological attack, public health officials may not immediately be able to provide information on what you should do.”
Radiation Threat:
“As with any emergency, local authorities may not be able to immediately provide information on what is happening and what you should do.”
Chemical Threat"
“Quickly try to define the impacted area or where the chemical is coming from if possible.”
“Take immediate action to get away.”

Though not inspiring or reassuring, the Homeland Security website messages are clear enough. They tell us, in the event of a biological or nuclear attack, to NOT depend on the authorities and during a chemical attack, you must decide what to do.

FEMA says : "Responsibility begins at home. You are responsible for protecting yourself, your family, and your property to the best of your ability... This means using your own resources to mitigate against, prepare for, respond to and recover from emergencies."

Americans need to learn that personal readiness and self-defense are individual issues.

Tip: Gas pumps need electricity. During periods of increased alert, refill the gas tank when it is half empty.
During an emergency, be prepared to pay $5-10 per gallon. Have sufficient cash on hand to get yourself to your family rendezvous.
