Your description is interesting. Flash back to Beijing circa 1948. People didn't remove any outer clothes on entering a typical house. If friends visited, middle class people would make a little fire. The fuel was little spheres of coal dust and mud, caked together. People sat around the smoky apparatus to warm their hands. The coal dust came from coal brought into the city by camels. Without the fire people's hands were in their sleeves, left hand in right sleeve etc. The fire could also boil water for tea.
China changes, eh?
