OT: Mercury fillings have been around for a long time and I tend to think that if they caused problems we would have known about it by now.

Many chronic health problems have been blamed on mercury fillings. It's a controversial position (not one held by the big dental associations) but there are a growing number of dentists who believe that mercury fillings are dangerous, at least to some people, and should be replaced with non-toxic substitutes.
