If setting off a dirty bomb in New York city is not a direct threat to the United States in your parlance then you have created your own parallel universe.

I didn't know that such an event had occurred, or that we had obtained any information that Saddam's regime actually planned on carrying out, or supporting such an operation..

Have I been missing something, or are you just popping in from your alternative universe??

If anything, there was a fear that Saddam might attempt to provide such material to Al-Qaeda for a dirty bomb, and I recall some "talking heads" discussing it, but I don't believe Bush, or anyone in his administration made any assertions that they had proof of such operation underway.. There might have been some conjecture and speculation about "worst case scenarios", but nothing definitive.
