Hal, rightclick on an empty area of the desktop and you'll find ways to arrange the icons so they stay put. You can delete any shortcut without affecting the associated program. Rightclick on its icon and then on 'properties' to make sure.

Make sure you run a virus scan with updated definitions as well. The Magistrar(sp?) worm used to rearrange desktop icons.
