There existed no state of war between them and the US that I recall..> The only reason the US could have and did have to invade France was to drive out the Germans. By the way -- the French cheered our arrival, unlike the Iraqi's. The French did not want to live under German occupation. We liberated France from foreign occupation. We did not have to fight the French the way we are now fighting the Iraqis. But then we were an army of liberation in France, and we are an army of occupation in Iraq. Its funny how people the world over react to having an army of occupation on their soil.
