Yeah, but that took a long time to do. It wasn't until Star Wars that we accomplished the final nail in that coffin.

So, what would have happened if we let loose the reigns on Patton at the end of WWII and told him to go for it?

One of the things that drove the USSR bankrupt was trying to combat our advanced technological weapons. The funny thing is that some of the technology they were trying to compete with didn't even exist and never would! Of course Afghanistan cost them a few more bucks than they originally thought too.
