State bankrupt because of Democrats The Union staff We hope that there are some well-informed readers who will want to correct Shane Valdez's misconceptions about the Democratic Party (Other Voices, Dec. 15). It is not the Democratic Party. There must be some reasons why Nevada County is heavily Republican. It could be that this majority are successfully independent, pay their taxes expecting a responsible government. California is bankrupt because the Democrats have spent more money than the state took in. No one can deny that social programs are necessary to help those who are unable to help themselves. Conversely, there can be no denial that there is a certain amount of fraud and mismanagement involved. Valdez repeats liberal attempts to castigate Republicans as starving children, the poor and elderly and claiming cuts in programs, the cuts are reductions in unabated growth. Democrat claims to care for the needy are displaced by their fealty to the unions, trial lawyers and the myriad of special interest groups that take precedence over oft claimed compassion. Tax cuts grow the economy, create jobs and break the cycles of dependency. This is called democracy. theunion.com
