Looks like you have some good suggestions to try out. I'd be surprised if fdisk can see a drive that Max Blast can't see. If all else fails and the drive is still under warrantee a call to Maxtor tech support can't hurt.

MaxBlast is a drive installation utility. Maxtor's diagnostic software is called PowerMax. Here's the info and link for the latest version:
