I was a small time farmers' market vendor, CCOF member for about 12 years. Even then, we never bothered to buy organic, and we did not come anywhere close to being self-sufficient. The only thing close to organic, on a year round basis, were eggs, but, even then, we weren't certified organic for eggs; although chickens prefer organic to inorganic (they don't prosper on sand and rusty nails), they don't seem to care whether the cracked corn was grown commercially or organically; they will even eat dog shit, so what do they care if a farmer bought Ortho or Monsanto to raise corn. Even their babies didn't seem to mind. Free range vs factories sure shows up in the eggs, but they don't mind commercial feed, and plants don't mind getting fed with manure from chickens who ate commercial feed part of the time.
I have too many real worries to consider the theoretical of getting a spongy brain when I'm 80. Short term, intermediate, long range, take your pick. Will I have running water in the morning, or will I have 500 gallons of ice in my holding tank? Do I have enuf firewood for the winter? Should I drive 40 minutes on frozen roads to see Return of the King, or should I stay home, light a fire, poison mice elf with CO, and heat up a pizza, poisoning mice other elf with CO from propane? Can I get my daughter thru college working part-time, or will I have to put arsenic in my mother's wine? Will the hill I'm looking at, with the telephone pole at a severe angle, slide, cutting me off from the net? How do I get the cow I am looking at standing on that same hill back to her own place on the other side of the fence, when there is just enuf snow that I can't go places she is? Should I listen to JW and buy nothing but metals, or should I keep diversified? What galaxy will I go to when I leave earth, after this time around? I don't need to worry if I'm going to get demented at 80 from eating meat; I need to worry about how to know that "this winter" is the time to find a night like this, with residual snow on the porch and the skies clearing and the temp headed towards 20, to get a little drunk and a lot stoned, hopefully on acid, and go out and do the Kevorkian trip by hypothermia, because "next summer" they will be coming to take me away to the nursing home. Hard thing to time, something to worry about. Will the maybe one inch of snow that is predicted from squalls turn out to be 8 inches, and will I be able to make it into town to buy pipeweed, and should I grind a load of coffee now in case I lose electricity? That's important; residual DDT and antibiotics in my food isn't very high a priority.
