What a way to close out the year. Barron's has an interview this week with a bear, who isn't short anything.
That's right, no shorts. On anything. He's up 44 percent this year being long hard assets, mostly small caps.
When even the Bears have 44 percent annual returns in an upski market, it tells me the champaigne will be flowing in a couple of nights.
It was a great year. The new economy came back. The old economy is coming back (still in progress). Saddam is gone, and Ghadafi is re-opening Libya for business.
The job market here is improving. I would say this is the best job market we've had since 1999, although some places (Tulsa, St. Louis) are lagging badly.
Out west, that big roar you heard was America West rehiring 10,000 people in Phoenix. One of my picks this year was airline stocks _ not my best pick, but it's working out.
One of my picks for 2004 will be drug stocks. Everybody says they hate them, and the charts look terrible...
My guess is the funds will stay long next year but will be a bit more cautious, and the falling buck doesn't hurt, either.
The problem with high-growth tech names are the short-term tax breaks in place this year designed to juice cap-ex spending. Those are about to expire.
But as for the economy and jobs, 2004 looks like a dandy. Business confidence is up, a lot of profitless competitors have died off, and GreenJeans isn't inclined to do anything dramatic in an election year.
Happy New Year, Sig. Hope you find that number for the Mercedes dealer.

PB
