Check Tools | Internet Options | [Advanced Tab] under "Microsoft VM" to see if the "JIT compiler for virtual machine enabled" is checked.

Yes, after SI Bob mentioned Java, the above was one of the locations I subsequently noticed references to Java, so I checked to see if the same boxes were checked in my IE 6 settings as were checked in my IE 5.5 settings. The "JIT compiler for virtual machine enabled" box was checked in both browser versions, while the other two boxes under "Microsoft VM" were not checked. I believe I also tried checking "Java enabled logging" for the heck of it and it made no difference.

I've seen this happen when you run utilities such as Cookie Pal

I have never run a cookie utility.

For example, aside from the particular circumstance you cited on SI, have you seen this problem at any other time?

I can distinctly recall having this problem, browser crash, with SI messages every time I have tried to upgrade to IE 6, but I can't recall whether I have had any trouble with any other websites in the past when I upgraded. I don't think I did, but each time having clicking on the SI message counter crash my browser was enough to send me back to IE 5.5. For certain, the only website I had any trouble (browser crashing) with this time around when I upgraded to IE 6 was SI. I have a Motley Fool membership as well, but neglected to engage in any activity over there while I was upgraded to IE 6.

Best regards, Huey
