M did not elaborate, so I can't say for sure. Probably a non sequitur. I agree that government "should" cut spending to match tax revenues, but I have come to the conclusion that no government - federal, state, or local - will EVER cut spending in a rational fashion. Public monies are to some extent used for public good - defense, transportation infrastructure, education - but far too much of it is used on things which should not be paid for by government at all, solely benefits political cronies, or is simply mismanaged. To give you one example from NJ, an increase in the gasoline tax - 12.5 cents/gallon I think - was proposed a couple of months ago. The Transportation authorities are out of money! Our roads are falling apart! Our gas tax is low compared to surrounding states! Well, as it turns out, the reason that the Transportation authorities were out of money was because a lot of their funds were siphoned off to the General Fund, and never replaced. Also, the Democrats thought they could "share the blame" with the Republicans by lining up enough of them to vote for the increase, but that was before the November election, when the Dems won a majority in both Houses, joining a Democratic Governor. So the Republicans who had agreed to support the increase reneged - why not let the Dems take the blame completely? They control the government! So, guess what - no gas tax increase. Feh.
