JC,
Bush has a credibility problem with some that goes back to the first election. Some have not forgiven him for the Bob Jones speech and the vial attacks on mccain in SC. Other are pissed at pre-9/11 bush and his isolationist tendencies and ability to offend US allies along the way. Others hate the religion thing.
For me 9/11 changed everything so for me it became a clean slate for bush and all other pols for that matter. IMO, the last 4 presidents took the terror threat too lightly. Guilt particularly goes to clinton and pre-9/11 bush#43. I forgive them both. This is part of the US psyche. It's "the people dont ever want to hear a discouraging word" syndrome and the nations leaders thus cant ever seem to level with us and LEAD. FDR pussy footing is way into WW2 is a clear example. If he moved too fast he would have been defeated in an election. And if he moves too slow we get pearl harbor. Same with bush.
Post 9/11 bush has been magnificent but for those folks who wont forgive him, the addition of mccain and the subtraction of the hated cheney will give bush more support in the red states??. Bush/MCain could win with mondale numbers. Bush/Cheney probably will win with 52-54%/
Deanies wont vote for bush but some will support mccain against a bum like gore in 08. Character matters to these folks and if they feel mccain will give their views consideration and they also feel gore is the biggest political opportunist in a generation they might just move to mccain. The republican party is at its greatest power in our history and that spells the end according to my pendelum rule. McCain winning in 08 may give the republicans another leg in their run. mike
