Ashford recused himself from the Plame investigation. A Special Prosecutor has been named. Reasons for the recusal are not stated but we can surmise that Ashcroft is covering his derriere.

This is bad for Bush as Ashcroft is obviously distancing himself from the investigation since there is probably something he saw he did not like or was too sensitive. Any damage may be containable if the Special Prosecutor acts swiftly enough so that any fall-out is not felt after the summer conventions, a big "if."

Not good.

The bold choice would be McCain

McCain really hates Bush over the South Carolina primary. He blames Rove for the whisper campaign against him. But if he saw the 08 election as a chance for him, he might do it.

McCain has not been a reliable Republican vote in the Senate. He is a loose cannon opposing the Republicans on several of the close votes last year in the Senate when he sided with the Democrats.

My assessment is that there is a less than zero chance that the a lame duck Bush White house will offer the plum Vice Presidential position to Senator McCain.

Rudy Guliana would be be far more likely.
