He recused himself because he is a political appointment of the administration in the Whitehouse. His recusal does not imply anything at all. The only inference one should draw from his recusal, is that the matter is to be conducted without the appearance political interest.

The Justice Department is fully staffed with career, apolitical attorneys and investigators.

That's because no one gives a rat's stinky butt about it. Small potatoes and probably only 1% of Americans remember what happened. Ashcroft stepped back to muffle the cries of cover up.

I didn't read it that way. This way, Asscrack can say when the leaker isn't found, "I'm not involved.", then blame the fodder and appoint a new fall guy, if needed.
