To: The Vet who wrote (26149 ) 12/31/2003 2:43:00 AM From: marcos Respond to of 39344 Things like this are impossible to reconcile as long as you limit your options to two partisan extremities, both of which have been demonstrated not to work ..... on accepting 'foreign funds', that's not so simple with cubanos because of the exiliados, not all of whom are rabid batistianos, many have family in Cuba .... i don't know what you've heard on this, but i'll give ten to one odds it came from a partisan source - there is no other sort of information on Cuba .... my knowledge of recent events is limited, my attitude comes from way back, formed from contact with cubanos and ex-cubanos more than anything [and often not in the way they wanted it formed] Castro is indefensible in his actions against dissidents .... it's probably true that the US was interfering, Cason [sp?] and likely others, however that is no reason to lock up citizens for twenty years .... and it's not the only event of this nature by a long shot - a lot of way-left socialist types who initially supported Castro have spoken out on this issue for years, since the Heberto Padilla incident of 1971 actually, that was a big turning point, disillusionment for a lot of people - nybooks.com Chávez looks to me like he could go this route, easy ... that speech he made where he overtly threatened signers of the peticion, that was pretty clear, this man is not a liberal democrat .... so how do you reconcile that, i dunno, kind of doubt that there is reconciliation possible with these sorts ..... certainly none of them should be in power for more than six years, and you just know Hugo envies his buddy's forty-year reign .... it is all very well to defend your nation from the mafiosos of Miami and Washington, but there is a lot more to building a country than that .... control the speech of the citizen, and you're building a prison not a country Anyway, this is a stock thread, politics shouldn't go beyond what is relevant to the speculator .... there are lots of political threads here, i post on FADG sometimes ..... you won't see any cubanos posting there, a lack not due to an insurmountable language barrier, eh ..... cheers
