It's our country's choice if we want to, "leaving only management types" here. For example, what have the city mayors done to fix the housing situation for new hires? Haven't heard anyone other than Buffett and the media, try to convince people to get rid of prop 13 for second homes. On a day I had a meeting in San Jose, the city of SJ hosted a presentation on what they think is wrong and what they can do to fix things. Ironicoally, there was no time slot over lunch to ask business people what WE think they should do. So obviously I couldn't go. Nor did they have a website survey or email address one could drop a note after work, informing them what to do. We don't have time for this stuff during the working day. Nor did I see anything on their presentation about housing for new hires. (edit) However, I really am impressed with the Milpitas mayor met a couple of years ago - no press showed up when she attended a volunteer event, and she walks up to everyone (not just the media) and asks THEM how things are going and she seems interested in doing what is needed. SJ mayor shows up with a media circus and keeps as far as way from public feedback as possible. You have to wonder if he's getting the feedback from the business people. I'll bet you that Milpitas mayor (assuming she's still in office, not sure if she is) will perform wonders for our business issues. The only thing stopping me from hiring in the USA, when we eventually ramp again, would be the cost of housing for new hires (doesn't pay for me to invest in them if they are going to move out of the area due to housing costs) and also the supply of hardcore engineering entrepreneurs who could hire the unemployed people. We have a world-class innovation center here. The problem is, where are all the innovators? Where are the entrepreneurs who will start companies, to get people employed? When one looks around, there's less potential innovators because of the recession - and they are not at the univ with post-docs, cooking the next startup, as you would normally expect - we've asked them to pack up their bags and leave because of the recession, and then we're clueless why there are no jobs here. That's only my impression. Regards, Amy J
