“Hutterites and Mormons (who eschew all manner of modern
practice)"

Hello Eric
I will have to correct you on referring to Hutterites as farmers who “eschew all manner of modern practices.”
I have Hutterites as neighbours.
They are as "modern" as any other producer around.
Hutterites in Alberta operate large intensive mechanized operations.
I had issue with my Hutterite neighbours this summer over their doing an aerial application of an insecticide, Lorsban, which drifted into our household with unpleasant results.

I was told by them it is "harmless, we use it on the gardens all the time."
These are the gardens from which produce is sold at the gate and at various farmer's markets btw.
I am not intimate with their livestock practices but I would be willing to be my farm against Wildcat Resources that they are using growth hormones, antibiotics et all in their beef and dairy herds, fowl and swine operations.
In addition some of their cultivation practices in this district have done irreparable damage in the area of soil erosion. Drop by and we will walk down my windbreak and look at the 3-4 foot high soil drifts from their adjoining field.
In my mind Hutterites are essentially corporate farming operations under the guise of a religious sect. This is fair enough, however I take offense to them being romanticized and portrayed as humble stewards of the land.

Eric I generally enjoy your posts however you are shooting from the hip on this one.
Have a good 2004 and please get the Zenda boys busy.
