SAN FRANCISCO (CBS.MW) -- Networking equipment makers such as Cisco Systems (CSCO) and Ciena (CIEN) posted gains in early trading Wednesday after the Department of Defense awarded a series of contracts to several companies to build a global optical data network. Also on the rise were Juniper Networks (JNPR) and Sycamore Networks (SCMR).

NEW YORK (CBS.MW) - Shares of Lexar Media (LEXR) rallied 46 cents, or 2.6 percent, to $17.85 after WR Hambrecht upgraded the digital film maker to "hold" from "sell" on the belief that a stabilized pricing environment will lessen pressures on profit margins. Analyst Satya Chillara thinks the company can beat its own fourth-quarter earnings forecast of 15 cents a share as a result. Chillara's 12-month price target on the stock is $14.
