We really aren't that far apart, then. The only question, as far as I can see, on which we differ is whether the ethics which we both agree developed within and as part and parcel of religion could have developed if man had not been religious but had always and consistently denied the existence of any gods.

It seems what you're saying is that your ethics are equivelent to Christmas -- both came out of religion, but you can glom onto both without feeling the need to acknowledge the faith out of which they arose.

When I said doubted the existence of an ethical atheist, I was intending to say that one couldn't develop a set of ethics purely out of an atheist origination. But since you're not arguing that, there's no problem.
