200 new KFC outlets in China
31/12/2003 08:25 - (SA)
Beijing - Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) plans to open 200 more outlets in China next year, state media reported on Wednesday.

The Beijing Business Today said KFC's total number of restaurants in China is expected to reach 1 000 by the end of June next year.

Although the fast food giant has not yet disclosed the number of new restaurants it opened this year, the figure is most likely to be 200, the report said.

KFC has spread to 200 Chinese cities in the 15 years since first opening its doors. The company also runs more than 100 Pizza Hut outlets in China.

To help boost sales in the coming year, it also plans to launch a Portuguese egg tart with a recipe exclusively from Macau, Lisbon's former colony in southern China.

The report added that KFC's rival McDonald's plans to change its product packages and offer more promotions globally to reverse declining profits.

McDonald's so far has avoided franchising, unlike KFC.

McDonald's operates 566 stores on the mainland but has slowed the rate of growth of new stores this year, company chief executive Jim Cantalupo said in July.

In the second quarter of this year, McDonald's opened a total of four new stores in China, compared with 35 a year earlier. - AFP
