Many years ago I used to volunteer for an ambulance company. The job usually entailed sitting in the pits of stock car races and passing out bandages to mechanics who banged their thumb. One time, just as the race was ending we got a radio call to go to a nearby apartment. There we picked up a beautiful girl, about sixteen, who had passed out from a drug overdose. She didn't look like she had been a user long. All the way to the hospital we gave her oxygen and tried CPR, but she just got paler and colder until we dropped her off at ER. I always think of her when I think about junkies.
