I am not a pacifist but if everyone in the world was, there would be no war.

If only humans were so.

Those who pursue peace at all costs will never be truly free.

how angry can i get at the naive young who run with dean and think they can make the world a better place by themselves?

I never get angry with them. We need American youth to believe they can make a difference. It is the well traveled, knowledgeable and highly experienced, old, wise farts (like Dean, Clark and Kerry) who play with their young minds and beg for their money for personal gain that rile this old goat.

Watched TV as well last night, michael. A Law & Order program could have been an analogy of the word "imminent" and what the consequences are on both sides of an equation. Obviously, I thought of what the situation in the world today really is, from the terrorists own words, and from those well meaning folks who think we should wait to be "hit first."

A young 10 year old girl turns out to be a killer of first a cat (put a poison in his milk to see him die), and then killed a boy her age by hitting him with a rock, many times, and then putting his body into a sewer pipe. The judge had to make a decision to put her into a State Mental hospital for treatment for many years, or put her back into society in the care of her mother, with visits to the judge on a monthly basis

The 3 psychiatrists all insisted she was a young sociopath, and would kill again if returned to society.

The Judge ruled, that as the girl hadn't killed anyone else yet, she turned her back to her mother with the required visits.

I have criticized the Department of Homeland Security several times for inventing and heavily promoting a color-code system that provides no guidance for the average joe. We are only told to be prepared and extra-vigilant. Yet with no guidance, most American families remain clueless about preparation and vigilance. I still don't believe it has to be that way and expect some changes to be made to the guidance to American families soon.

I must say now, that I am very impressed with the way the color-code apparently works for those it was designed for, the enforcement and intel agencies. We must have penetrated some terrorist orgs or at least their commo systems to be able to identify specific flights and ships that are threats. The response so far has been cooperation by all.

I do believe the public will have to see some bad guys taken down during one of these high alerts to sustain the level of cooperation we are getting so far.

I do agree with you that we must go on with our lives. Humans face many daily threats and most of those threats are not from terrorists. My goal is always to have a nice day today. None of us are promised tomorrow. If Times Square is where you need to be on New Year's Eve, I agree by all means go there.

I also believe attaining a level of readiness that provides for one's family is important. Once accomplished, most tell me they have a higher level of relaxation and no longer feel compelled to focus on every detail being reported.

Mike, I agree with you that we can leave the fighting to those who choose to accept the task. We should also know that we are personally responsible for ourselves and our family's safety and well-being. We cannot and should not rely on someone else to provide a safety net for us.

Tip: The Department of Homeland Security recently increased their recommendation to maintain a family food supply from 3 days to one week. The Mormon Church recommends one year. I have advised my family to keep 60-90 days on hand. This is not an expensive thing. 50 lbs of rice at Sam's Club is $18.

Select emergency food supplies with high energy per unit of weight and volume and choose items with a long shelf life. Rice, beans, canned fish and meats, and nuts are all good.
