I think the electoral college has outlived it's usefulness. It's high time to eliminate this gimmick, which was made up to placate the smaller states in the union.

However it backfires on the small states, because the president will only listen to those states that are close enough to make a difference in the election. If the popular vote were used to elect the president, then candidates would likely give more attention to all states, since every vote counts in that system.

In addition going to the popular vote would eliminate the possibility of shenanigans such as happened in Florida so that a large block of votes would fall in Bush's column, when the state was split almost 50-50.

I truly believe that the country is far better served by going to a popular vote. No doubt the republicans would agree if this recent election was won by Gore because he had the electoral votes and Bush had the popular vote.

The reason that the electoral vote makes no sense today as many people relocate from state to state during a presidential term. I've voted in 4 states myself as my residency changed.

What this country needs is a system that honors each and every vote. Where every vote counts. I'd support an amendment to the constitution that changes the law so that a popular vote would determine the president.

I've felt this way since I first learned about the electoral college in civics classes. Long before the selection of 2000.
