this is only part of the problem. So much crap is coming out of Washington, and State legislatures, board of educations, etc. that prinicpals are not allowed to run their schools as they see fit and teachers are not allowed to teach as they see fit. While I certainly agree that there needs to be general guidelines, if the teacher's ability to teach is hamstrung by these rules you can hardly blame them for being resistant to accountability.

I have a good friend who is a good teacher, but she objects to accountability for the reason stated above and because the schools have become so politcal that she does not trust them to be fair in evaluating her performance. (Which is a real argument for trashing the whole system)

After many conversations with teachers, admininstrators, and educators I am convinced the system is so broken and corrupt that vouchers are the only hope.

Bill, I think that's way too cavalier. This has all the earmarks of those big, Federal programs that we have come to realize are worse than the problems they are trying to solve. The problem with the union may be intractable, but that's no excuse for the command and control approach.

Perhaps this is just phase one and the real intent is not to cure but to break. In that case, I'd say we can't afford a time-consuming circuitous route and need a more direct approach.
