Flight cancellations have indices lower

While the small-cap Russell-2000 Index (RUT.X) holds a fractional gain, the major indices have taken a turn lower after several commercial air carriers announced flight cancellations due to intelligence gathering that suggest heightened threats of terrorism.

A recent announcement from British Airways that is cancelled a flight from London to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia may have been a catalyst for this afternoons further declines as other flights from London to Washington have been cancelled this week, as intelligence gathering suggests terrorists may still be targeting commercial aircraft to be used as weapons.

There have also been reports that additional flights originating in Mexico to Los Angeles, CA have been cancelled. Earlier today , Aeromexico Flight 490 to Los Angeles was canceled for the second day in a row, in a joint decision by the United States and Mexico.

A statement released by the U.S. embassy read, "On the basis of credible intelligence information, the US and Mexican governments decided that it was in the interest of both our countries to cancel Aeromexico Flight 490 from Mexico City to Los Angeles on December 31 and January 1."

Some floor traders cite this afternoon's selling on some traders not wanting to go home overly long ahead of the weekend with threats of terrorism still lingering into the weekend. Those traders have also said that this morning's pre-ISM economic release open higher was partially attributed to some protective January 1 hedges being removed at the open, when there were no reports for terrorism at key New Year's celebration venues on
Thursday.
