We live in a republic governed by the rule of law. The founding fathers new the dangers of "mob rule" and carefully avoided that form of government.

Technically I believe our form of government is referred to as a Democratic Republic where people are afforded representitation via their vote.

With the exception of the Senate where the tail is allowed to wag the dog and Democrats fear and up or down vote on Judicial Nominees.
