Never thought it would get there. Here is some news from today. Tuesday January 6, 11:01 am ET PRINCETON, N.J., Jan. 6 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- RCN Corporation (Nasdaq: RCNC - News) today launched its new digital platform, Digital City, in Chicago, which will provide customers with state-of-the-art cable TV and Internet technology. The company's Chicago customers can now receive digital cable television, MegaModem Mach 3(SM) and Mach 5(SM) Internet service, and well as Impulse on Demand(SM). "The launch of Digital City and our MegaModem services provides RCN's Chicago customers with access to our cutting-edge technology," said Mike Angi, Senior Vice President and General Manager of RCN's Chicago market. "We're proud to be the first company offering these enhanced cable television and high-speed modem services to Chicago." A strong infrastructure and proprietary network facilities have made it easy for RCN to upgrade customers to digital service. RCN has taken digital technology to the next level with three ways for customers to search for desired programming at their convenience: traditional channel surfing using the remote, using the Interactive Programming Guide, or selecting a channel from "Starview(SM)," a one-of-a-kind mosaic program guide with 246 channels of programming. "Starview" was created by RCN and is unique to the Chicago market. The guide allows customers to view several "mosaic picture tiles" of programming based on program genre, such as all news channels, all family channels or all entertainment channels. "Impulse on Demand" is the video service that allows customers to choose from a wide array of movie selections with the capabilities of using VCR-type functions such as fast-forwarding, pausing and rewinding. The customer has unlimited access to movies for a 24-hour period. Also coming soon are HBO on Demand, Cinemax on Demand and Kids Unlimited. RCN's Mach 3 and Mach 5 Modem services will provide customers with up to 3 Mbps and 5 Mbps of download speed, respectively. Customers will now be able to download videos, MP3 music files and other Web-based forms of entertainment in significantly less time than it would take with competitor cable modem or DSL connections. Additionally, the upgrade allows RCN to offer exciting interactive features for its customers, including gaming such as blackjack and video poker, up-to-date interactive weather updates and daily horoscopes. Customers' television sets will become innovative places for games and other fun features currently not available through any other Chicago area cable operator.
