<<<If Americans honestly look at their own nation, and their own beliefs, we will see that we too are Maximalists, every bit as much as the Islamists. Americans overwhelmingly believe our culture, our political and economic system, is vastly superior to all others, and is destined to spread to every corner of the world, displacing all competing systems. This attitude is what scares the rest of the world. Not just the Saudis and Malaysians, but the French and Mexicans.>>>

Who writes that kind of BS and where do they live.?
The fact that many retirees take their pensions and go to live in Mexico, Spain, France, or other places should say something about attitudes. And of course, nobody in LA complains about $30k in building permits, or smog inspections, or gas prices and overcrowding.
And our voting and election systems are so honed to perfection that nobody wants to change them.
Well, OK, if a professor says so, I guess we have to believe it.

I can think of several points where we disagree, but thanks for your thoughtful reply. I'll have to get back to it - but for now: Which Jihad should be considered Greater or Lesser is apparently subject of a centuries-long argument. Our concern is with the segment of Muslim population which subscribes to the more aggressive version.

Is it possible that a pursuit of education, of economic and technological achievement may along the way change the "pursuers" in such a way that they will forget their original "maximalist" agenda? I think it is possible, but unlikely. Their extremist revolutionary Qutbian "Vanguard" will make sure that this doesn't happen.
