If you have to, stay in the far right lane when traffic gets really thick.

The left lane has always seemed the safest to me, particularly when there are more than three lanes. Nowadays I always head straight for the left lane. Too much cross traffic in the right and middle lanes. In the left lane they can only get you from one side.
