Yes, I am aware of that, he was also a dixiecrat, which was in fact a right wing splinter (States Rights Democratic Party) of the regular party.

A lot of Southern, conservative Democrats switched to the Republican side around that time. That's why we have a Republican majority now (or a major reason anyway) He wasn't involved in sexual misconduct, just pure hypocrisy - which is my biggest b*tch with the current Republicans. Perfect example he set. Strongly against integration - while he fathered a child with an African American woman. Someone with a different character would have owned up to it. But - he chose the easy way out - and hid the fact. Then he campaigned against the civil rights of his own child! What a guy. Isn't there some special level in purgatory for someone like this? I hope there is.
