Suicide bombings un-Islamic, says Musharraf

RAWALPINDI: President Pervez Musharraf reiterated on Friday the government’s resolve to uproot extremism, calling the elements behind terrorist incidents “enemies of Islam and Pakistan”.

“We will not let these extremists go free, we will track them down and fulfill our resolve to rid the society of elements responsible for the agony and suffering of innocent people,” the president told relatives of the people injured and killed in the December 25 assassination attempts on his life. He urged the nation to help the government find the extremists.

He also gave cheques of Rs 500,000 each to the family of every person killed in the twin suicide attacks. The families of seven policemen killed in the attack are being given an additional amount of Rs 500,000. Each injured was given Rs 100,000.

President Musharraf said extremists were not only harming the country’s image but also attempting to tarnish Islam, which stands for tolerance and brotherhood.

“This is not Islam, the elements behind these incidents are not Muslims because committing suicide is unlawful in Islam. They are bringing misery and anguish to innocent people.

“This is not Islam, our religion ordains that he who kills one person kills the entire humanity. I want to assure the nation that we shall deal with such elements effectively, whether they are foreigners or local people carrying out acts of extremism.” The president praised the courage of the police personnel who lost their lives in the attacks. “They offered the sacrifice of their lives in the line of duty, their sacrifice is unforgettable, they were my companions, and I am deeply grieved at their loss,” he said. —APP

* India proposes single currency, economic union for SAARC

This is not going to be easy or fast. The Indian Rupee is not a free floating currency like the US$. It is illegal to have Indian currency outside of India. Be very interesting to watch what transpires.
