Most macro economic statistics are put out by one or another arm of govmnt. Should I believe someone else's interpretation of them?

That is what I said. You seemed to be suggesting that all govmnt produced data should automatically be discounted to zero. Doing so would leave you with no stats at all, and no basis for any conclusion or investing decision.
