Yes. Historically the stock market, as a reflection of the state of the economy, has a spotty record. That's what TA is for. This does seem to be an FA thread however, and govmnt statistics, reasonably discounted, are part of the toolbox of prognosis. Since almost all of the macro stats come from some arm of govmnt it seems to me that one must find a way to interpret and use them or resign oneself to pure TA or simple luck (with stops).

For instance, last week's initial claims were around 339k? However, in the BLS press release the unadjusted figure is available for anyone to see at well over 400k. (I think I'm remembering the figures relatively closely, but not certain. The unadjusted may have been over 500k.) It seems the press was interested only in the "headline" number, which is typical and expected. Perhaps you'll agree the real problem is people's unwillingness to do any of their own digging or thinking.
