3 stages to this too: denial, followed by reluctant acceptance, followed by a resolve to change the situation. May not happen. Notice the reactions - over the past several decades - of many American ethnic communities whenever any of their individual members have been accused of collaborating with Nazis during WWII, of mass killing of Jews, etc. They - generally - never advanced beyond (very) "reluctant acceptance". They still tend to protect their tribesmen no matter what.
