I think that the famous American "Melting Pot" hasn't been melting too well in quite a long time. I think there is more and more of a tendency for immigrant groups NOT to naturalize, but to preserve more of their native characteristics. I think this is related to the advance of "Political Correctness". When people see the American establishment and her mainstream culture bend deeply and enthusiastically backwards, trying to accommodate various types of "otherness", they perceive it as lack of confidence. For some reason, humans prefer to join clubs which are at least to some extent "restricted"... -g.
