He is the kid that got picked on in school. They either overcome it and do very well or they become what you witness here. A demented, tortured soul, exalted in the witness of others pain and saddened to lonely bitterness when seeing the triumph of those that excluded him so many years ago. A pain so great, he himself seeks the seclusion of his excommunication from the healthy society. Some way the cycle needs be broken.
