John, last things first.

Must have been some struggle.

The article about TV and exercise addiction etc is very interesting and very important because there can be no doubt that all of us are, to a lesser or greater extent, involved in activities which release "happy" chemicals in our brains. It may well be that these activities are "dumbing-down" all of us, I don't know, but I do know that I can identify such behaviours in everyone I know, including myself.

That is why I disagree with Herbert Krugman that "right-brain" thinking messes up one's powers of discrimination. In fact, I have made a conscious effort, for as long as I am aware, to do as much "right brain" thinking as possible and also be involved in many meditative activities. In my opinion, it is those who are predominately left brain thinkers who are the most screwed up. Those are the Type-A personalities, the ambitious ones, who keep pushing and pushing, always assessing their status in life, constantly comparing their performance to others and counting their money all the time. Those are the ones who are, in fact, on a one-way ticket to the divorce court and then a heart-attack --- and an early grave.

In fact, it is only right-brain thinking that can prevent this type of behaviour and if TV can aid in right-brain thinking, particularly if it is associated with increased brain alpha-wave activity, then I'm all for it. In fact, I might even turn up the volume a bit so I can hear it!
