Most readers just don't go inside, and take the lead for the whole story.

I'm having trouble relating to that problem since I haven't read a paper paper in many years. But, as I recall, the jump was never an issue for me. I either read only the headline, stopped somewhere around the fourth paragraph, or read the whole thing. The jump was never an obstacle. The amount I read was a function of my interest level.

But I think your pursuing this is super. Nothing like a cause to animate one.

P.S. Lotsa folks read USA Today. It intentionally shortens its articles so jumps are not an issue.
