It all depends on the sarge in charge of the kitchen. The first time I drew KP was the weekend the DC Air NG was activated in 1961. Their cook was the chef at a club called the "Roaring Twenties East". That was probably the best fed Air NG outfit in the military. Their box lunches were better tasting than our holiday meals in the base chow halls for regular active troops.

I had a connection (best man at my wedding) to a Navy guy at a crypto school in DC. He would leave me a uniform and his chow pass in his locker twice each week - that's when steak was served. The AF chowhall had steak twice a month, tube steaks. I was working nights and had great lunches twice a week for a year.
